UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's swimming & diving team continued its resilient effort on Saturday morning, but ultimately dropped a 183-156 final to 11th-ranked Virginia in the conclusion of a two-day meet at the McCoy Natatorium. Freshman Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) pulled out a historic win in the 400 IM to crack the Penn State record book and reach an NCAA `B' Qualifying Cut in her second event of the meet. Junior Megan Marco (Lebanon, Pa.) also won Penn State's second diving event in as many days.

Modglin followed a strong Friday with her first victory against the Cavaliers. Despite trailing entering the final stages of the 400 IM, she finished strong to overtake Virginia's Claire Crippen by 0.15 seconds for the top time. Her final time of 4:18.23 was good for an NCAA `B' Qualifying Cut, her second of the meet and third of the season. That mark also stands as eighth-best in school history while also breaking the seven-year old McCoy Natorium record. This follows her second-place 200 backstroke finish on Friday, which was good for second in school history.

Other strong performances were highlighted by senior Michelle Myers (Boalsburg, Pa.), who almost won the 50 freestyle in a great effort that came up .01 short. She finished with a time of 23.45, a season-best for the Lions.

Penn State also pulled out wins in the 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 400 IM and 400 freestyle relay after Virginia had clinched the overall meet victory. Despite not placing in any of those events, the Cavaliers did race via exhibition.

The Nittany Lions continued their strong showing in diving behind Marco's win in the one-meter. She followed junior Ilana Zeises' (Huntingdon Valley, Va.) three-meter victory with a score of 258.60 to win her fourth event of the year and third in the one-meter. Penn State finished one-through-four followed by Zeises, freshman Katie O'Connell (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Meg Alderman (Arlington, Pa.).

The squad now enjoys two weeks off before traveling to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Ohio State Invitational from Dec. 4-6.
