UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Despite hanging tough all evening long, the No. 24 Penn State women's swimming and diving team finished Friday in a 117-50 hole against No. 11 Virginia with Saturday's action still to come. The Lions' lone victory came from junior Ilana Zeises (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) in three-meter diving while freshman Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) was within a split second of two wins. She also swam to a near record performance with a career-best and NCAA `B' Qualifying Cut in the 200 backstroke. The two squads reconvene on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the McCoy Natatorium.

Modglin was within 0.48 total seconds of two more wins in her young. She was only 0.45 out of first in the 200 backstroke with a strong finish of 1:56.88 while coming within .03 of a victory in the 200 IM (2:03.22). Her effort in the 200 backstroke was good enough for second place on the Penn State all-time list, only trailing senior Daphne Skelos' (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) time of 1:55.50 set last season. In addition to a place in the Penn State record book, Modglin also earned her second NCAA `B' Qualifying time in as many meets, both coming in the 200 backstroke. She previously swam to a first-place finish and Virginia Tech pool record with a time of 1:58.89 on Oct. 31.

The Nittany Lions impressed in diving action as they placed first, third and fourth, respectively. Zeises finished the three-meter diving with a career-best score of 262.25, good for her first win of the season.

Penn State also placed second in two other events, the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay (1:33.34). Seniors Michelle Myers (Boalsburg, Pa.) and Lindsey DeForrest (Wycombe, Pa.) were on the relay team along with sophomore Samantha Palser (Chester Springs, Pa.) and freshman Paige Whitmire (Lederach, Pa.). Meanwhile, DeForrest's time of 51.59 in the 100 freestyle marked her season-high.

The squads reconvene on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the McCoy Natatorium. Events on tap are the 200 medley relay, 1,000 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 400 IM and 400 freestyle relay.
