PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Penn State men's swimming & diving team had to deal with more than just top-flight competition at Trees Pool on Friday evening; it dealt with a wave of sickness going through the squad. Nevertheless, the Lions lead Maryland, 113-54, and trail host Pitt, 100-67.
Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.), Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.), Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.), and Colin Quirk (Pittsburgh, Pa.) all notched wins on the first day of competition in the men's tri-meet. Quirk, the hometown representative on the Nittany Lions, gathered the squad's first win of the night with a season-best showing in the 1,650 freestyle, winning in a time of 15:55.48. Fellow senior Ben Ryan (State College, Pa.) was close behind in 16:00.94, good for second.
Alden captured the 100 freestyle in a time of 45.17, while Scherer took the 100 breaststroke with a showing of 57.74. Bushman capped the day's wins in the 400 IM (3:59.81). Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) put up a strong individual performance in the 100 butterfly, getting edged out for the win, earning second place in a time of 49.67.
Day Two of the meet will continue at Trees Pool Saturday morning with the diving events kicking off at 9 a.m. and the swimming events starting at 10 a.m.
