UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team (2-0) kicked-off the 2010 season with two victories over the Princeton Tigers and the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Sunday. The Nittany Lions started the day with a 6-1 win over Princeton followed by a 7-0 defeating of Lehigh.
"Overall this was a great start to the year," said head coach Todd Doebler. "For the first match, I thought the guys showed good composure and did a nice job competing. We are looking forward to playing a very good Georgia Tech team this upcoming weekend in Florida."
Penn State vs. Princeton
Penn State came out and won the doubles point to garner the early 1-0 lead. Following the strong doubles play, the Nittany Lions cranked out victories in five of the six singles bouts to win the match, 6-1.
In doubles action, junior Eddie Bourchier (Hobart, Australia) teamed up with sophomore Jason Lee (Melbourne, Australia) to face Princeton's Yohei Shoji and Matt Siow. The Nittany Lion tandem won the match, 8-0 to give Penn State the early advantage in doubles.
In the No. 2 bout, junior Ryan Gormley (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Warren Hardie (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) took on Matija Pecotic and Ilya Trubov. The Penn State duo won the match, 8-1, to clinch the doubles point. With the doubles point already decided, senior Guillaume St-Maurice (Saint-Eustache, Quebec) and sophomore Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) defeated Coleman Crutchfield and Alex Faust, 8-6.
With Penn State leading 1-0, the match moved on to singles action. Bourchier played in the No. 2 position and dominated Siow, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Following Bourchier's victory, Lee was defeated by Charlie Borsens, 6-4, 6-4. Penn State had a 2-1 lead.
Gormley made the score 3-1 when he defeated Pecotic in a tough three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0. Penn State clinched the match when Hardie beat Shoji in an exciting three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
With the match already decided, St-Maurice picked up a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set victory over Faust. Freshman Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) finished off the matchup with Princeton by downing Crutchfield, 6-4, 6-4.

Penn State vs. Lehigh
Penn State came out to win all three doubles matches and took a 1-0 advantage on the Mountain Hawks. The Lions then went on to win all six singles matches to lock a 7-0 victory.
In doubles action, Gormley and Hardie squared-off with Troy List and Leland Richardson in the No.1 bout. The Nittany Lion tandem pounded out an 8-2 victory. In the No. 3 bout, Cohen teamed up with Welnetz. The pairing came back and defeated Lehigh's Ryan Krueger and Collin Laffey, 8-6, after trailing 5-3 at one point. The win clinched the doubles point for the Nittany Lions.
With the doubles point already decided, Lee and St-Maurice teamed up and won their match over Matt Savran and Edgars Rauza, 8-4.
Penn State took a 1-0 lead into singles competition. Bourchier gave the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead when he downed List in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-3. Cohen played in the No. 4 bout and earned his first win of the day as he defeated Crutchfield, 6-4, 6-3. Penn State had a 3-0 lead over the Mountain Hawks.
The match was clinched in the No. 2 matchup of Lee and Laffey. After running away with a 6-3 first set win, Lee had no problem in the second set, winning 6-1. Welnetz picked up a singles point for Penn State on court No. 3, as he defeated Richardson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) saw action in singles, playing in the No. 5 matchup with Krueger. Griffin downed Krueger, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Guanhua Chen (DaLian, China) finished the match for the Nittany Lions in the No. 6 bout, as he defeated Cameron Silbert, 6-0, 6-1.

Penn State opens its season with a 2-0 record, and will head Gainesville, Fla. this upcoming weekend for ITA Regionals. The Lions will take on No. 43 Georgia Tech on Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. Penn State will face either No. 11 Florida or No. 61 Furman the following day.
