COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Penn State men's swimming & diving team bounced back from a disappointing Friday night with a solid Saturday performance in defeating Northwestern, 166-162, at McCorkle Pavilion. The Nittany Lions fell to host No. 9 Ohio State, 263-70, and No. 6 Michigan, 270-72.

Penn State (4-6) was led by Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) who captured a win in the 100 free in a time of 44.57 and helped lead the 200 Freestyle Relay to third place. The squad, which swam a time of 1:21.96, also included Basil Kaaki (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia), John Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.) and Jamie Grennan (Milford, Pa.).

Senior Dan Fimbianti (Mahwah, N.J.) touched the final wall in the time of 50.09 in the 100 backstroke for a fifth-place finish. Freshmen Graham Risley (Riverside, Ill.) and Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) were eighth and ninth place respectively in the event, finishing in times of 51.12 and 51.71.

Kaaki put together the next-best individual performance with his 50.06 swim in the 100 butterfly, which earned him eighth place. Scott Marino (Scotch Plains, N.J.) added another top 10 performance in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.47, good for ninth. Bushman was tenth, just .01 behind Marino with a time of 1:53.48.

The 200 Medley Relay of Risley, Scherer, Kaaki and Alden finished fifth in the event with a time of 1:30.68.

The Nittany Lions will be back in action next week when Penn State hosts Buffalo (Feb. 4) and Lehigh (Feb. 5). The two meets will serve as the final home events for the Nittany Lions in 2010.
