UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Giulia Carando
Giulia, a native of Torino, Italy, is one of three Nittany Lions to participate in every round this season. She averages 80.8 strokes-per-round, which is fourth on the team for players who have participated in 10 or more rounds.
Q: How did you get involved in the game of golf?
A: I just followed my parents because they were members at a country club. I picked it up that way. I just went with them.
Q: Where did you grow up and what was it like?
A: I grew up in Torino, Italy. Golf-wise, it was really, really good. From the country club that I'm from, we have a lot of professional golfers like the brothers Molinari (Francesco and Edoardo). They're the ones that won the world championship in November. It's very nice to be around professionals that really know what they're doing. I learned a lot from them.
Q: Why did you choose Penn State?
A: I thought it was a good compromise between athletics and academics. I like the spirit of the school.
Q: What are some lessons that you have learned since coming to Penn State?
A: Being on a team like the golf team, it is very individual. In order to succeed I feel that the most important thing to do is understand each other and really learn from your teammates and don't be judgmental. By learning about them and appreciating all of the different personalities is the only way you can succeed or have a good time.
Q: Who is your role model?
A: My dad. He's a very competitive man. He's a very well known orthopedic surgeon and he's a very hard worker.
Q: What do you do for fun outside of golf?
A: I like to go skiing because I used to race. Whenever I get the chance I go out and ski, especially coming from a place where we had the winter Olympic Games. It's a big thing over there.
Q: Is there anything you would like to accomplish while at Penn State?
A: I want to do the best that I can. I feel like there are so many opportunities out there in life by doing the best that you can. It's really hard to set a goal, especially for golf because it's not like other sports. It's different. I'm just doing the best I can every day to reach my goals. I'm going back home over the summer to play for the national team and to play for the European team championships.
Q: What are you doing after Penn State?
A: I don't know yet, exactly. I know that I'm majoring in journalism so probably working for corporate communications. A big company would be the best and if it's in the sports field that would be even better.
Q: What are some things you would like to do in your life?
A: I really want to go to South America and learn about the culture and live there for a couple of years. That's one of major things that I would like to do after college.
Q: Who is the funniest person on the team?
A: I think Jamie Lavin is pretty funny. The freshmen are pretty funny and my roommate Dineen Notman.
