UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., - Rick Kaluza, Penn State Associate Athletic Director for Finance, will talk about how intercollegiate athletics activities positively affect a university and its bottom line during a Wednesday, March 31 presentation.
Kaluza will be speaking at 6:00 p.m. in 110 Smeal College of Business building. He oversees all aspects of Intercollegiate Athletics' financial operations, including budget management, strategic planning, financial reporting and analysis, capital projects and contract proposals for 29 varsity sport programs and their facilities.
Kaluza will discuss how Penn State accounts for revenues and expenses and offer his views on the general question of why intercollegiate sports are good for a university's `bottom line.' Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is self-supporting.
Some academics have claimed that, in general, published reports overstate the 'profits' of intercollegiate activities, resulting in hidden subsidies from the university's general funds. Others have argued that, by providing financial aid and other services to student-athletes, intercollegiate programs actually subsidize and directly assist the university's budget.
The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Center for Sports Business Research, and the Institute for Sports Law, Policy, and Research.
