CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- After the first day of the 2010 NCAA Fencing Championships, the Penn State women's team finished the day in third place in the overall team standing with 54 individual victories. Notre Dame was No. 2 with 57 wins and St. John's (N.Y.) stormed through to end at No. 1 with 58 wins.
In the women's saber, senior Caitlin Thompson (Portland, Ore.) ended in fourth place with 11 victories today, only two victories behind Duke's fencer Rebecca Ward, who finished in first. Sophomore Olivia Benedek (State College, Pa.) finished in 13th place with six victories.
In the women's foil, junior captain Doris Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) also finished with 11 victories, finishing day one in fourth place. Willette, the reigning champion, is two wins behind first place, which is currently held by Columbia (Barnard) fencer Nicole Ross. Junior Olga Ostatnigrosh finished in 20th place with three wins.
In the women's epee, freshman fencer Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Milan, Italy) had a strong showing in the competition, coming in second place with 12 victories. Senior and defending National Champion, Anastasia Ferdman (Maalot, Israel) followed right behind in three-way tie for third place with 11 victories. Olympic fencer Noam Mills of Harvard University finished in front with 13 victories.
The Championships will continue tomorrow morning at 9:30 with the fifth through seventh rounds of the competition. The semi-finals and finals will begin at 2 p.m. with the individual women's titles announced shortly after the competition ends.
