UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Nine Penn State field hockey players have been named to the 2009 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, as announced late last week. The honor is presented to those student-athletes who have achieved a GPA of 3.30 or higher through the fall semester. The Nittany Lions were also recognized with a team award for garnering a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall.
Three seniors, three juniors, a sophomore and two freshman were named to the squad. Seniors Gina Bartolacci (Washington Crossing, Pa.), Amy Bonenberger (Palmyra, Pa.) and Bethany Marvel (Newtown, Pa.) all finish their career as four-year award recipients.
Along with the three graduating seniors, three juniors were on the list as well - Ali Meves (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), Jenny Purvis (Maple Glen, Pa.), Daneen Zug (Manheim, Pa.). Sophomore Casey McCartin (Horsham, Pa.), redshirt freshman Alex Schlener (Bethlehem, Pa.) and freshman Kelsey Amy (Sweet Valley, Pa.) round out the honorees.
The Nittany Lions are deep into spring practice with their spring opener set for this Saturday when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to play American, Virginia and James Madison. They then return home for an Apr. 13 matchup against Bucknell and Apr. 22 showdown with Lock Haven. Both games are set for the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. The annual alumni game is scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 24 at 11 a.m.
