THIS WEEK'S GAMES
Penn State (0-3, 0-0 CAA) will play two games this week. The Nittany Lions host Villanova (2-1) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. either on Bigler Field or in Holuba Hall before visiting Rutgers (2-1) on Saturday, March 13, at 1 p.m.
Penn State is coming off hard-fought 11-10 overtime loss at Ohio State last Saturday. Sophomore Matthew Mackrides led Penn State with a five-goal burst while freshman goalie Dave Baker played the entire game, giving up 11 goals and collecting eight saves. Freshman Danny Henneghan won 10 of 11 face-offs for the Nittany Lions and had a team-best five ground balls in the loss.
Henneghan leads Penn State with 13 points off 12 goals and an assist. Billy Gribbin has nine points off seven and two Hogan has seven off six and one. Baker sports a 13.66 goals against average in the net. Charley Henneghan has won 30 of 48 face-offs for a .625 percentage and leads Penn State with 14 ground balls.
Villanova heads into Tuesday night's game with a 2-1 mark. The Wildcats are coming off an 8-6 win over Fairfield last Saturday. Kevin Cunningham had two goals and an assist in the win.
Rutgers enters the week with a 2-1 mark as well. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 15-6 win over St. Joseph's last weekend. Kory Kelly and Justin Pennington each had three goals to lead RU to the win.
The Nittany Lions head to Durham, N.C., to take on Duke on Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m.
MACKRIDES NETS FIVE IN OVERTIME LOSS AT OHIO STATE
Sophomore Matthew Mackrides scored five goals to lead Penn State in a tough 11-10 overtime loss at Ohio State on 2/6. Mackrides took 15 shots, ten on goal, and connected on five of them. The burst improved the sophomore's team-leading point total to 13 off 12 goals and an assist.
BAKER AND Danny Henneghan EMERGE
Freshmen Dave Baker and Danny Henneghan had solid outings for Penn State in the overtime loss at Ohio State. Baker played the entire game in goal, getting eight saves in over 61:00 of minutes of play. Henneghan won 10 of 11 face-offs in the game.
HOGAN NOTCHES THREE POINTS IN CLOSE LOSS AT #3 NOTRE DAME
Junior Chris Hogan led Penn State with two goals and an assist in the Nittany Lions 12-8 loss at No. 3 Notre Dame on 2/28. Hogan's effort helped spark the Lions on a late comeback that fell short as the homestanding Irish held on late for the win.
FRESHMAN BAKER SOLID IN NOTRE DAME GAME
Freshman goalie Dave Baker played the final 40:00 minutes of Penn State's game at No. 3 Notre Dame and had his best outing of the early season. Baker allowed only four goals over the final two thirds of the game and collected seven saves.
MACKRIDES, GRIBBIN AND HOGAN LEAD LIONS IN HOME OPENING LOSS TO ROBERT MORRIS
Matthew Mackrides led Penn State with five goals and an assist for six points in Penn State's 24-17 home opening loss to Robert Morris on 2/20. Freshman Billy Gribbin had six points off four goals and two assists while Chris Hogan had four goals. The Nittany Lions out-shot RMU 75-40 but were thwarted by 26 saves from Robert Morris goalie Sal Barcia (RMU had 29 as a team).
SCRIMMAGES GIVE GLIMPSES INTO 2010 SEASON
The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team took part in two scrimmages in preparation for the 2010 season. The Nittany Lions hosted Hobart on Feb. 6 in an evenly played game that allowed head coach Glenn Thiel to get every player some playing time. The Nittany Lions got to see if of their three goalies in action, with Dave Baker getting the first half nod and John Nichols and Conor Baucum splitting time in the second half. The next weekend, the Nittany Lions hosted the Iroquois Nationals in an exhibition on Sunday night. Penn State was impressive in the scrimmage with the Nationals, who were short-handed entering the contest. The Nittany Lions doubled up Iroquois in shots and outscored the visitors in each period. Freshman Nick Dolic tallied five goals in the game while sophomore Matthew Mackrides had four. The Penn State offense was once again balanced while the defense showcased the toughness it will take to have a successful 2010 campaign.
