IOWA CITY, Iowa -
The 11th seeded Penn State women's tennis team (4-19, 0-10 Big Ten) dropped a season-ending match to sixth seeded Purdue (17-5, 5-5) today at the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City. The Nittany Lions pushed the Boilermakers to the very end, forcing three sets on three of the six singles courts.
The Boilermakers took an early 1-0 advantage as they won on two doubles courts to secure the doubles point. Following in singles action, Purdue won on three courts to grab the match victory.
In doubles play, freshman Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) and senior Sarah Lotto (Toronto, Ontario) fell to Michelle Sammons and Jennifer Rabot, 8-1, on the No. 1 court.
Following in third singles, Purdue's Imogen Golder and Bhavani Tirumurti defeated sophomores Michaela Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) and Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine), 8-1, to clinch the doubles point for the Boilermakers.
Senior Lauren McCarthy (Danbury, Conn.) and Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) were leading Gisella Pere and Anna Dushkina, 5-2, on the No. 2 court when doubles play was called.
Following in singles play, Sammons extended Purdue's lead to 2-0 as she defeated Simidian in first singles, 6-1, 6-0. Tirumurti then handed Prishlyak a 6-2, 6-1 loss on the No. 3 court to put the Black and Gold ahead 3-0.
Golder secured the match victory for Purdue with a 7-5, 6-4 win on the No. 5 singles court over Stracar. The match was called once the Boilermakers took a 4-0 lead.
McCarthy battled with Rabot in second singles pushing action to three sets. Rabot held a narrow 4-6, 6-2, 2-1 lead. Fourth singles also was in its third set, as Zobeideh held a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 advantage over Dushkina.
In sixth singles, Lotto and Pere were tied in their third set of play, 6-1, 3-6, 5-5.
Purdue will move on to face third seeded Illinois (14-8, 8-2 Big Ten) tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Nittany Lions will resume play in the fall.
