Women Third, Men Fourth in Stacked Field at Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Juniors Kara Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.) and Kyle Dawson (Coatesville, Pa.) each posted top 10 finishes, leading their teams to outstanding finishes in stellar fields, Saturday at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at the Blue and White Golf Courses. Millhouse recorded a seventh-place effort, pacing the 24th-ranked women's squad to a third-place finish in the team standings, while Dawson's third-place showing helped the Nittany Lion men to a fourth-place standing.

The Nittany Lion women totaled 59 points for third - thanks to five finishers in the top 17 - behind No. 11 Georgetown with 28 points, and No. 7 Princeton with 45 points. Princeton took the team title on the men's side, edging No. 16 Georgetown, 48-52, with Navy in third with 79, and Penn State in fourth with a 92-point total.

"I think both teams showed a lot of promise today for the early season, with great efforts from Kara Millhouse and Kyle Dawson up front," said Director and Head Coach of Penn State Track and Field/Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan. "We've been using the saying 'when the rubber hits the road,' with the team lately, and I think today showed that when it comes down to it throughout the season, I think both our teams have really showed they've got what it takes to be there when it matters."

Millhouse led the Lions on the women's side, placing seventh overall in an outstanding effort with a finishing time of 21:16 over the 6,000-meter course. Sophomore Natalie Bower (Pleasant Unity, Pa.) and junior Caitlin Lane (Greenwich, N.Y.) would run as the Lions' second and third finishers, placing 11th and 12th, respectively, crossing the line in 21:25 and 21:27. Sophomore Brooklyne Ridder (Cincinnati, Ohio) was the fourth Lion to cross the finish line, placing 14th overall in 21:37. Senior Paige Anderson (Carlisle, Pa.) placed 17th overall, and fifth among Penn Staters, running 21:46.

Rounding out the Nittany Lions' top seven finishers were freshman Emily Giannotti (Coudersport, Pa.) and senior Katie Shelley (Columbia, Pa.), who placed 26th and 31st, overall.

Georgetown's Emily Jones took the individual title with a finishing time of 20:59, followed by teammate Renee Tomlin, who crossed in 21:01.

Dawson held his own among a tremendous men's field, placing third overall in 25:19 for the 5.2-mile tour - just six seconds off individual champion Donn Cabral of Princeton. Junior Vince McNally (Paoli, Pa.) would also turn in a top 10 finish, placing seventh with a finishing time of 25:34. Junior Chris Cipro (Harmony, Pa.) was the Lions' third finisher, crossing the finish line in 26:03 to take 21st in team scoring.

Senior Lucas Zarzeczny (Pittsburgh, Pa.) claimed 33rd overall - 29th in team scoring - as the Lions' number four, finishing in 26:27, while sophomore Danny Pawola (Naperville, Ill.) clocked 26:30 to score a 32nd-place finish among team scorers - 36th overall.

Seniors Ryan Foster (Tasmania, Australia) and Owen Dawson (Coatesville, Pa.) took care of the Lions' sixth and seventh places, taking 38th and 41st overall.

The Lions will take next weekend off before heading to the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. Action in scheduled for Saturday, September 25.
