NORFOLK, Va. - The Penn State women's tennis team had a strong opening day at the ITA Atlantic Regional as junior Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) advanced to the singles main draw of through the qualification bracket.
Perrotta defeated eighth-ranked Isel Martinez-Marcos of Virginia Tech, 7-5, 6-2, in her opening match. In the second round, Perrotta bested UMBC's Heidi Danielsson, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the main draw.
Freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) also competed in the singles qualifying draw, winning her first match 6-3, 6-2, against Temple's Jordan Batey. Sandor came up short in the second round by Georgetown's Lauren Greco, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles action, Perrotta and freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) picked up a thrilling 9-7 opening round win over Marshall's Kristina Kopricina and Karli Timko. Sandor and Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) were beaten 8-2 by Virginia's Marjorie Baker and Caryssa Peretz. Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) are the ninth-ranked doubles team and received a first round bye. They will face UMBC's Kim Berghaus and Emily Mannix tomorrow at 10 a.m., while Perrotta and Bedard will play Maryland's Jordan Hansbrough and Julia Huschke at 9 a.m.
