Penn State Has Fair Performance at Home

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 29,2011 - The Penn State fencers were home this weekend, Jan. 29, facing some of the most elite collegiate fencers in the country. The one-day event hosted Johns Hopkins, Drew University, Duke, Temple and UNC all proving to be challenging opponents for the Nittany Lions. Both the men's and women's teams struggled throughout the day but were able to walk away with some personal victories.

The women were successful in sweeping the competition against Drew University in both the foil and epee events. Nicole Glon went 3-0 in the women's saber against Drew with only three points scored against her.

The third round of competition brought a 9-0 victory over UNC for the Nittany Lions in the women's saber.

Three wins for Michael El-Saleh helped the Nittany Lions edge out Duke in the men's foil, 5-4. The women were also able to defeat the Blue Devils, 7-2.

An overtime win for Vernon O'Garra completed his 3-0 sweep of Johns Hopkins in the men's epee. The Penn State men's epee fencers went on to beat the Blue Jays 6-3.

Next weekend, Feb. 6, the Nittany Lions will head to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The competition will begin at 9 a.m.
