Penn State Men's Golf Tied for Second after First Round at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C.; March 11, 2011- The Penn State men's golf team is tied for second with a 293 (+9) after the first round of play at the 2011 Pinehurst Intercollegiate. T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) carded a 1-under par 70 in the first round, which puts the talented senior in a tie for second overall.

Sophomore Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) posted a strong first-day score with a 1-over 72, which is tied for 10th. Classmate Ernie Marin (Miami, Fla.) shot a 3-over 74, while sophomore Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, WVa.) carded a 77 and senior Tommy McDonaugh (East Norwalk, Conn.) had a 79.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Matt Porter (Cortland, N.Y.) carded a 77.

Eastern Michigan leads the field into Day 2 of the three-day event with a 291 (+7). Penn State and Michigan State are tied for second with a 293 (+9).

Eastern Michigan's Brian Churchill-Smith is in first with a 69 (-2).

The Nittany Lions have experienced much success at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in the past years, having won the tournament title in 2009 and tying for third in 2010. The team currently holds the low 54-hole team total record with 852 as well as the low final round score of 279.
