HUNTINGTON, W.Va.; March 20, 2011 - The Penn State women's tennis team (4-9, 0-2) lost to No. 41 Marshall 4-3 on Sunday in the second match in as many days. Sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) won her team leading eighth match of the season for Nittany Lions. The 4-3 loss marked the third one point loss to a ranked team this season.
Freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) fell in first doubles to Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zoprazna, 8-3. In third doubles, Januskova and senior Denisa Zobeideh (Weston, Fla.) earned their second straight victory in third doubles as they defeated Kara Kucin and Kristina Koprcina, 8-3, to tie the race for the doubles point. In the deciding doubles match, freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and junior Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) lost a tough match to Katherine Kellner and Maria Voscekova, 8-5, in second doubles for their first loss as a pairing giving Marshall the doubles point.
In first singles, Januskova earned her sixth win in eight matches and her team leading eighth victory as she bested Marshall's Dominka Zaprazna, 6-4, 6-0, to tie the match at 1-1. Bedard faced Voscekova in fifth singles but fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-2, to give the Fighting Herd the 2-1 lead. In sixth singles Perrotta lost a tough first set and eventually fell in the match, 7-6 (4), 6-2, as Marshall took a 3-1 lead with a chance to clinch the match.
In third singles, Zobeideh won the first set against Kellner, but eventually fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, to give Marshall the match.
In second singles, Simidian matched up against Kissell, the No. 1 ranked player in the Atlantic region. It took Simidian three sets but eventually defeated Kissell, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Sandor defeated Koprcina in fourth singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, to close the match at 4-3.
The Nittany Lions will return to State College when they host the Temple Owls at 5 p.m. on Fri., Mar., 25 before hosting Big Ten opponent Iowa on Sun., Mar., 27 at 11 a.m.
