UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Members of the Penn State women's soccer team depart Friday for a 10-day trip to Granada, Nicaragua to participate in Soccer Without Borders. Maddy Evans (Glenside, Pa.), Jess Rosenbluth (Gladwyne, Pa.) and Ali Schaefer (Las Vegas, Nev.) will combine efforts with assistant coach Ann Cook and PSU soccer alum Zoe Bouchelle, who serves as SWB's director of the Spring Infusion Camp.
Soccer Without Borders is a round-the-clock charitable organization that helps underprivileged girls in developing countries learn and play the game of soccer. With the help of volunteers through various camps in different sites, Soccer Without Borders helps infuse the use of equipment, teaching and learning the game of soccer.
The quintet of Nittany Lions will volunteer their time in multiple areas while in Nicaragua. Evans, Rosenbluth and Schaefer will participate as college volunteers under Bouchelle, who previously finished an internship for Soccer With Borders during 2009-10.
Cook is traveling to Granada for the Spring Infusion as well as a part of a grant from the U.S. State Department. Cook will help conduct camps throughout the region and will even get to work with the Nicaraguan national team for a few days. The experience will culminate in a friendly match between the Nicaraguans and the SWB collegiate volunteers on May 21.
Evans, Rosenbluth and Schaefer will document their time in Nicaragua with posts to Penn State's Women's Soccer Player Blog. Check in daily, as new updates should help PSU supports follow along during this worthy cause.
