UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's tennis junior Petra Januskova began competition in the Tommy & Lefebvre Ontario Open on Saturday. Januskova, the tournament's number one seed, received a bye in the opening round on Friday.
Thirty-two of Canada's best tennis players will battle in the prestigious tournament, held at the Rideau Tennis Club in Ottawa. The Tommy & Lefebvre Ontario Open is familiar ground for Januskova who hails from the city and has competed in the junior level of the tournament when she was in high school.
After a successful sophomore season at Penn State in which she was named first-team All-Big Ten, Januskova hopes to gain momentum at the tournament heading into her junior season.
"It's definitely my favorite tournament of the year," said Januskova. "The players that are in it are pretty well known across Canada. It will be nice to do well."
Last season, Januskova led the Nittany Lions with a 14-8 record, including five victories over ranked opponents, in addition to being ranked in the ITA for most of the year.
