CHARLESTON, S.C. - Following the first day of play at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., the Penn State women's golf team is currently in a tie for 19th place out of 22 teams competing through 18 holes. The Nittany Lions carded a 20-over-par 308 in the tournament hosted by the College of Charleston at the Yeaman's Hall Golf Club.
The two freshmen competing for the Nittany Lions helped lead the squad in their first-ever collegiate tournament. Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) and Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) each notched a 5-over-par 77 in the opening round.
Junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) and sophomores Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) and Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) matched the score of 77, leaving five Penn State golfers in a tie for 70th place. Junior Jamie Lavin (Deerfield, Ill.) competed as an individual and carded an 80 in the first round. She is currently in a tie for 99th place.
LSU opened the tournament with an impressive 8-under-par 280 as a team. They are currently in first place, four strokes ahead of Florida. Penn State is tied with fellow Big Ten competitor Wisconsin.
The second round of play will commence tomorrow, Sept. 12, with tee times starting at 8 a.m. The Nittany Lions will begin at 8:45 a.m. The third and final round will be on Sept. 13, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
