Nittany Lion Tennis Tallies Double Digit Wins on Day Two of the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team continued its solid showing on the second day of the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational, earning a total of ten victories Saturday. Two doubles tandems and four players in the singles tournament advanced on the day. Action will continue tomorrow at the Lenz Tennis Center.

In doubles action, the Nittany Lions saw two pairings advance in their flights. In Flight "A", sophomore Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) and junior Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) advanced to tomorrow's final after they defeated St. John's Milo Hauk and Gustav Kallen, 8-6.

In Flight "B" doubles, seniors Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Christopher Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) continued to navigate through the consolation bracket, taking a wildly exciting semifinal over Zach McCourt and Dan Richardson, 9-7.

The Nittany Lions tallied a total of four wins in singles action on the day. In Flight "A", Welnetz fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Arvis Berzins in his quarterfinal matchup (7-5, 7-5). Welnetz then dropped his quarterfinals losers' bracket match against Venkat Iyer of Cornell (6-2, 6-1). Additionally in Flight "A", Bader defeated Eugen Brazdil of the University of Pennsylvania, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round of consolation play. The sophomore then took down Buffalo's Wotjek Starakiwiecz, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to tomorrow's consolation final against St. John's Milo Hauk.

Flight "B" was once again the strongest bracket for the Nittany Lions as Cohen, and freshman Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) advanced. Cohen took down his second round opponent, Columbia's Nathanial Gery, 6-3, 7-6 (1). Hanzlik defeated Danny Riggs of Cornell (7-5, 6-4) in the second round, setting up a meeting of teammates. In the Flight "B" semifinal, Hanzlik faced off against Cohen for the right to advance to tomorrow's final. Hanzlik took the first set 7-5 before Cohen was forced to retire due to injury in the second set. Hanzlik now faces Damien David of Buffalo in tomorrow's final.

Also in Flight "B" singles action, sophomore Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia) fell to Buffalo's Damien David in the pair's quarterfinal match, 7-6, 6-2. Young then defeated Princeton's Zach McCourt (6-4, 6-3) in the quarterfinal losers' bracket. He will face Cornell's Danny Riggs tomorrow for the quarterfinals losers' bracket final tomorrow.

In Flight "C" action, Hasyn defeated Farleigh Dickinson's Dom Hemy (7-5, 6-0) in the first round of consolation play. Hasyn then earned a semifinal victory over Mark Millbrandt from the University of Pennsylvania (6-4, 7-6) for the right to play to play the winner of Quoc-Daniel Nguyen (Cornell) and Tizian Bucher (Columbia) in the consolation final.

The Nittany Lions dropped three matches on the day in Flight "D" play. Junior C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) fell to Zhong Ming Chen of Cornell (6-4, 6-2) in second round play. He then fell in his first round consolation match, losing to Yale's Zach Krumholz, 6-1, 6-0. Seaborn also fell to UPENN's Robert Wong in Flight "D" play, 2-6, 7-5, 4-6. Junior Guanhua Chen (DaLian, China) fell to Yuri Gricheno of Fairleigh Dickinson in the Flight "E" consolation bracket, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.

Following the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational, Penn State will return home before heading to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 20-23.
