Men's Tennis Hosts Binghamton Saturday

Feb. 17, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team (6-2) enters Saturday's clash with Binghamton (2-4) looking to improve to 7-1 on its recent nine-match homestand. First serve at the Indoor Tennis Center will take place at 4 p.m. Admission is free and pizza will be available for all fans.

Last weekend, the Nittany Lions took all 14 points en route to sweeping both Buffalo and Bucknell by identical 7-0 scores. Senior Jason Lee (Sydney, Australia) and sophomore Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) overpowered Wojciech Starakiewicz and Vusa Hove of Buffalo, 8-4, clinching their third consecutive impressive victory in first doubles. The win jump-started a Nittany Lion attack that continued through the Bucknell match. The day was highlighted by a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 come from behind victory by freshman Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) over Hove.

With his doubles victory against Buffalo, Lee moved into 10th place on Penn State's career doubles victories list with 60 triumphs. A win against Binghamton would give Lee 61 career victories and move him into a tie for ninth place all-time with Chad Skorupka (1990-94) and Mark Barry (2002-06). Lee also 54 career singles victories under his belt, good for 19th all-time. Sophomore Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) also moved to 21st in career singles wins with 51triumphs.

The Bearcats, led by sixth-year head coach Adam Cohen, enter the match with a 2-4 record. Binghamton has earned four-straight America East Conference titles and has moved on the NCAA Tournament seven of the last nine seasons. Alexandre Haggai leads the Bearcats as the No. 1 singles player.

Penn State will take the week off before returning to action Saturday, March 3 when they battle the Army Black Knights. The action will begin at 10 a.m. Admission is free and pizza will be available for all fans.
