UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Despite career afternoons from redshirt-sophomore Jermaine Marshall (Etters, Pa.) and freshman Ross Travis (Chaska, Minn.), Penn State's men's basketball team fell short to No. 13 Michigan Sunday afternoon, 71-65. The Nittany Lions are now 12-19 (4-14 Big Ten) heading into to the Big Ten Tournament this weekend, while Michigan raises its record to 23-8 (13-5 Big Ten).
Marshall was on fire from the get-go, scoring 11 of his career-high 27 points in the first half, but it was not enough to keep pace with the Wolverines. After a 16-4 run over a nine minute span in the first half, Michigan ultimately took a 39-28 lead into the break.
Penn State never stopped fighting, however, and despite a deficit as large as 19 in the second half, battled back to within four points with 1:09 left to play before suffering the six point loss in the Bryce Jordan Center finale. Marshall added 16 points to the second half run while Travis poured in 11 of his 15 points on the day.
Penn State dominated points in the paint, 28-16, as well as second chance points, 15-3.
Seniors Cammeron Woodyard and Billy Oliver were both honored before the game. Neither was able to play due to injury.
