RIO VERDE, Ariz. - The Penn State women's golf team sits in fifth place after the opening round of the Rio Verde Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan, on Friday. The Nittany Lions, who are just five strokes behind tournament-leader Akron, posted a 26-over-par 310 on the par-71, 6,260-yard Quail Run Golf Course.
Both sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.), who birdied the third hole, and freshman Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.), who registered three birdies on the day, tied for 15th place after each carding a 6-over-par 77.
Junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) and freshman Erin Michel (Mason, Ohio) ended the first round one stroke behind the Nittany Lion leaders as they finished in a tie for 21st place with a 7-over-par. Ransone birdied the par-5 ninth and 18th holes, while Michel also birdied the ninth hole.
Freshman Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.), who registered a birdie on the par-3 fourth, rounded out the Penn State starters as she tied for 78th place with a first-round score of 88.
The second round of the three-day tournament will continue Saturday (March 10) with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
