TULSA, Okla. - Penn State men's tennis junior Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) and Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) both dropped tough matches in the third round of Prequalifying singles at the ITA Men's All-American Championships. Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) participated in a Prequalifying consolation round. Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) will play on Monday, Oct. 1 in the Qualifying singles round and The tournament is hosted by the University of Tulsa.
In his third round match, Bader won his fifth straight set of the tournament, before falling 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to TCU's Facundo Lugones. On Saturday, Bader earned his first two singles wins of the fall over TCU's William Edward-Stein(6-2, 6-3) and Texas' Jacoby Lewis(7-6, 7-5).
Welnetz dropped a tough 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 battle against Florida State's Dominic Cotrone. In Saturday's first round of Prequalifying singles matches, Welnetz defeated Clemson's Dominique Maden 6-2, 7-5. He followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win against New Mexico State's Luis Fernando-Ramirez.
The freshman, Trkulja, defeated Xavier's Brandon MacDonald 6-3,6-3 in a consolation match. In the Prequalifying first round, he fell against Xavier's Mesa Mei 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Hanzlik will make his tournament debut in the first round of Qualifying singles. Last weekend at the Ranked plus One Invitational in Virginia, Hanzlik picked up three wins, including one over a ranked opponent.
Bader and Trkulja will pair up in the Qualifying doubles round on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Hanzlik and Welnetz will also combine to participate in Qualifying doubles.
