MADISON, Wisc./ORLANDO, Fla. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished day two at both the Big Ten Indoor Tournament and the USTA Clay Court Invitational. Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) and Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) both picked up consolation wins on the day, while many other Nittany Lions put up tough battles in their matches. Both tournaments will conclude on Sunday.
Freshman Matt Barry reached the consolation semifinal at the Big Ten Indoor Tournament. He defeated Michigan State's Doug Zade 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the first round of the consolation bracket. He followed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Michigan State's Tyler Richmond. Barry will take on Wisconsin's Jakhongir Jalalov at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday in the semifinal.
Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China), C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.), and Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) all took tough consolation round losses on Saturday. Chen faced Michigan State's Christian Roehmer and fell 6-7(7-3), 6-2, 14-12. Griffin matched up against Michigan State's Tyler Richmond and dropped a 7-6(4), 1-6, 10-7 result. Young put up a tough battle against Iowa's Michael Swank, but fell 7-5, 1-6, 10-8.
Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar) lost 6-2, 6-0 against Purdue's Arthur Dobradin in his consolation match.
Chen and Young faced Illinois' Ross Guignon and Bruno Abdelnour in the doubles consolation final, but fell 8-0.
In the Garnet Draw Round of 16 at the USTA Clay Court Invitational, Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) matched up against Florida State's Cristian Gonzalez Mendez and dropped a tough 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 battle. Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) competed in the Spear Draw Round of 16 after receiving a Round of 32 bye on Friday. The freshman faced Florida State's Joao Gauer, but fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Bader and Trkulja will both compete in consolation matches on Sunday.
Bryan Welnetz advanced in the Gold Draw consolation bracket with his 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kentucky's Panav Jha. Tomas Hanzlik also competed in a Gold Draw consolation match, but fell 6-2, 6-1 against USC's Jonny Wang.
