Nittany Lions Head to Big Ten Matchplay

BRADENTON, Fla. -

The Penn State men's golf team will begin their spring schedule Feb. 8-9 at the Big Ten Match Play Championship held at the Concession Golf Course in Bradenton, Fla.

The course, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin, is a par 72 and runs 7,474 yards. It will welcome all 12 Big Ten teams Friday, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, and last year's winner, Northwestern. The Wildcats have won three straight Big Ten Match Play titles.

Traveling for the Nittany Lions will be freshmen Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) and Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.); sophomores Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) and Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.); and seniors Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) and Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W. Va.).

Penn State, who is the number 10 seed, will play its first match on Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. against No. 7 Michigan State. The winner will advance to play defending champion Northwestern. First round buys were earned by the top four seeds: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Northwestern.
