Men's Fencing goes 5-0 at Duke to Remain Undefeated This Season

DURHAM, N.C. - The first ranked Penn State men's fencing team had an unbeaten record of 5-0 in Saturday's competition at Duke. The Nittany Lions' performance keeps them undefeated this season after four meets, and only one left to go until NCAA Regionals.

Penn State began their day with a dual against UNC, and easily defeated the Tar Heels by a score of 18-9. The highlight of the match was the Nittany Lion foil team fencing their way to a 9-0 record.

The second dual of the day featured a matchup of the No. 1 Nittany Lions vs. the No. 2 Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Penn State was able to defeat Notre Dame, their toughest competitor of the day, by a score of 16-11. Both the foil and epee teams were able to pick up wins against the Fighting Irish. No. 2 Notre Dame also lost to Duke during the meet.

The Nittany Lions then cruised to a pair of 21-6 victories over host Duke and Wayne State, followed by a dominant 22-5 win over Johns Hopkins. All three squads were undefeated in these three duals.

Both the foil and epee teams were undefeated at the meet, and the saber team finished with a 3-2 record. Penn State took home all three weapons cups with the most wins in foil (40), epee (31), and saber (27).

The undefeated foil team had outstanding performances from all members, including Olympian Miles Chamley-Watson (8-0), All-American David Willette (6-0), David Gomez-Tanamachi (8-1), and Jeremy Goldstein (9-2). The undefeated epee team was led by Yasser Mahmoud (10-4), and Jeffrey Miller (6-1).

The No. 5 Penn State women's team will compete at Duke tomorrow starting at 8 a.m. Scheduled competitors include No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 7 Northwestern, UNC, Duke, and Wayne State. Results will be posted on gopsusports.com at the conclusion of the meet.
