Penn State to Compete in Colleton River Collegiate

March 4, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team will be traveling to the Colleton River Plantation Club in Bluffton, S.C. for the two-day inaugural Colleton River Collegiate March 6-7.

The Nittany Lions will look to top the host team, Michigan State, as well as the University of Detroit-Mercy and the University of Michigan at the 7,365 yard, links-type Pete Dye Course.

The Pete Dye Course features unobstructed views of the Port Royal Sound and the Atlantic Ocean from 11 of its 18 holes and has hosted eight USGA qualifiers since 2005, including three U.S. Opens, four U.S. Amateurs and one U.S. Senior Open. Not only did Golf Digest select the course as "One of the Top Ten New Courses in the U.S." when it opened in 1999, but GOLF Magazine later chose it to be "One of the Top 100 Greatest Courses in the U.S."

Penn State's team roster for the tournament will include seniors Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) and Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W. Va.); sophomores Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park N.Y.) and Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.); and freshman Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.). In addition, freshman Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn) will be playing as an individual.

The first 36 holes of competition will take place Wednesday, March 6, with the final 18 holes concluding on Thursday, March 7. Both days will begin at 8:30 a.m.
