TULSA, Okla. - Tomas Hanzlik reached the ITA All-American Championships Qualifying Singles Draw on Monday, before falling in the first round of the draw. Hanzlik won his Pre-Qualifying Draw final round match to earn the advancement to the qualifying draw. Russell Bader also competed in the qualifying draw, but also fell in his first round match.
Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) looked to ride the momentum of his three-match win streak into his Pre-Qualifying Draw final round match on Monday morning. The junior met UC Irvine's Tyler Pham in the final round. Hanzlik continued his success with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
With the win, Hanzlik earned a Qualifying Singles first round matchup with Virginia's Justin Shane, ranked No. 117 in the Preseason ITA Poll. Shane came out strong with a 6-1 win in the first set and kept pressing with a 6-2 win in the second set.
Hanzlik finished the championships with a 4-1 record, including wins over Adam Taylor(Murray State), Szymon Tatarczyk(Purdue), Yannick Junger(UT-San Antonio) and Pham.
Bader (Austin, Texas) earned a spot in the Qualifying Singles Draw to start the championships, but drew a tough matchup against Santa Clara's John Lamble, rated 64th-best in the ITA Poll. Lamble was also the No. 14 seed in the qualifying draw. Lamble took the first set, 6-3. Bader battled back in the second set, but fell 7-6(3).
Bader and Hanzlik each have a consolation match on Tuesday to conclude the singles portion of the championships for Penn State. The Nittany Lions have a combined singles record of 7-4 at the tournament. Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain), Alex Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) each picked up a win in Tulsa.
Bader and Reilly will look to extend that record in the Qualifying Doubles Draw, starting on Tuesday morning. The duo received a first round bye and will face SMU's Arturs Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki in the second round at 9 a.m. The SMU pair is the No. 9 seed in the draw. If they win, they will play in the third round on Wednesday.
