Sept. 8, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-The Penn State women's golf team opened the 2013-14 season shooting a first round 299 at the Cougar Classic. The Nittany Lions are currently tied for 13th with Tennessee and Maryland with two rounds to play.

Junior Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) shot the low round of the day for the Penn State, recording a first round 73. Elliott is tied for 26th at one over par, 72. Senior Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) and junior Catherine Herrera(Houston, Texas) both finished in a tie for 47th, as they both shot a 75.

"Overall, I think we managed the course well, but we just need more putts to drop," head coach Denise St. Pierresaid. "Putting on Bermuda greens takes some getting used to. We are looking forward to another round tomorrow."

Brittany Marchand of NC State and Ally McDonald of Mississippi State are tied for the lead individually as they both shot first round 66's, which is the second lowest round in the history of the Cougar Classic.
