ITA Regional Main Draw Singles
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team members Russell Bader and Alex Fennell earned a spot in the ITA Atlantic Regional doubles semifinal with their win on Sunday. The duo won their quarterfinal to advance to Monday's match. Five Nittany Lions competed in the singles third round on Sunday.
Action at the ITA Atlantic Regional continues on Monday with the doubles semifinal and singles quarterfinals and semifinals.
After two wins on Saturday, Bader (Austin, Texas) and Fennell (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) earned a matchup in the quarterfinals against George Washington's Francisco Dias and Viktor Svensson. The Penn State duo came out on top with an 8-4 victory. In Sunday's semifinal, they take on Liberty's Shea Thomas and Jorge Azuero.
Roman Trkulja (Toronto, Canada) matched up against George Washington's Nikita Fomin in the third round. Fomin is the No. 8 seed in the Main Draw and came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
After earning a tough win on Saturday, sophomore Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) played another close match against George Washington's Danil Zelenkov, the No. 13 seed. Zelenkov took the first set 6-3, but Barry came back with a 7-6(3) win in the second set. Zelenkov won the decisive third set, 6-4.
Michael Reilly (Raleigh, N.C.) carried momentum into his third round match after two straight wins. Reilly met the No. 2 seed Virginia Tech's Amerigo Contini, but was not able to continue his win streak, falling 6-2, 6-2.
Fennell won a second round match on Saturday to move onto his Sunday match against Virginia Tech's Hunter Koontz, the No. 14 seed. Fennell came out strong with a 7-5 win in the first set, but Koontz came back with 6-3 wins in the final two sets to advance.
Bader, the No. 12 seed in the draw, also had a close match against Liberty's Shea Thomas. In the first set, Bader earned a 6-4 win. Thomas was the winner in a tough 7-6(2) set. Thomas continued his momentum with a 6-2 win in the third set.
