Nittany Lions Conclude First Day at Big Ten Singles Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished up the first day at the Big Ten Singles Championship, hosted by Purdue. Two Nittany Lions, Marc Collado Castells and David Kohan, moved on to the singles Round of 32 that will be played on Saturday. Penn State had a doubles team advance to the Round of 16 on Friday before dropping their match in that round.

Two rounds of singles and the semifinals and finals of doubles will be played on Saturday.

In his first round match, freshman Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) took on Michigan State's Paul Heeder. In a dominating effort, Collado Castells swept Heeder, 6-0, 6-0. In the Round of 32, Collado Castells matches up against Northwestern's Fedor Baev.

David Kohan (Sydney, Australia) met Minnesota's Ruben Weber in the first round. In a tough battle, Kohan came out as the winner. After Weber took the first set 7-5, Kohan bounced back with a tough 7-6(3) second set. Kohan continued to battle to win the third set 7-6(2). Kohan faces Michigan State's John Patrick Mullane on Saturday.

Freshman Nika Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) matched up against Nebraska's Marc Hermann, but fell 6-4, 6-3. Dolidze drops to the consolation bracket, where he takes on Wisconsin's Frederik Strabo on Saturday.

Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) faced Purdue's Marc Kovacs on Friday in the first round. Kovacs moved on with a 7-5, 6-3 win. Barry will compete against Indiana's Michael Sellitto in a consolation match on Saturday.

Freshmen Collado Castells and Dolidze combined in doubles against Indiana's Alekzander Davila and Elliott Yee in the Round of 32. The Penn State duo advanced with an 8-6 victory. In the next round, the Round of 16, they matched up against Northwestern's Baev and Strong Kirchheimer, but fell 8-5.

Barry and Kohan paired up in another doubles match, facing Wisconsin's Jakhongir Jalalov and Oskar Wikberg, but dropped an 8-6 match. In the consolation Round of 16, they took on Iowa's Jonas Dierckx and Matt Hagan, but could not bounce back, taking an 8-3 loss.
