WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished up play at the Big Ten Singles Championships on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind. The tournament was hosted by Purdue. Freshman Nika Dolidze reached the consolation quarterfinals on Sunday before being eliminated.
After dropping his first round match at the championships, Dolidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) won two matches on Saturday to advance to Sunday's Round of 16. In that round, Dolidze faced Purdue's Mateus Silva. After Silva took the first set 6-4, Dolidze bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set. In the tiebreaker set, Dolidze came out on top, 10-7.
Dolidze earned a spot in the quarterfinals, where he took on Indiana's Daniel Bednarczyk. In the first set, Bednarczyk won 6-4, but Dolidze came back with a 6-4 win in the second set. Bednarczyk took the third set 10-5. Dolidze went 3-2 at the Big Ten Singles Championships.
Freshman Marc Collado Castells (Barcelona, Spain) and sophomore David Kohan (Sydney, Australia) both reached the Main Draw Round of 32 over the weekend. Collado Castells defeated Michigan State's Paul Heeder on Friday, 6-0, 6-0, while Kohan knocked off Minnesota's Ruben Weber, 6-7, 7-6(3), 7-6(2).
Sophomore Matt Barry (Lido Beach, N.Y.) also competed at the tournament, but fell in his only match.
Collado Castells and Dolidze combined to win a doubles match in Friday's Round of 32. They moved on to the Round of 16, before being eliminated.
The Nittany Lions will next travel to the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. The invitational starts on November 8.
