UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State Lady Lions are ranked 13th in the Associated Press preseason poll, the highest of the four Big Ten schools in the voting. The Lady Lions will face six teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25, including three squads from the Big Ten. Earlier this week, Penn State was ranked 15th in the USA Today Sports Coaches' Poll.

The Lady Lions were picked to finish second in a preseason vote of the Big Ten coaches and media. Additionally, senior guard Maggie Lucas (Narberth, Pa.) was selected as the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year by both the league's coaches and media and was a unanimous first team All-Big Ten selection.

The Lady Lions saw their first action of the 2013-14 season with a 102-51 win over Division II Lock Haven in an exhibition game on Oct. 27. Senior guard/forward Ariel Edwards (Elmont, N.Y.) paced Penn State with 21 points, going 7-for-10 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. She also added five rebounds, two assists and two steals for a complete all-around performance. Lucas added 18 points, four assists and three steals against Lock Haven.

Of the six newcomers that played against the Eagles, freshmen Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) and Kaliyah Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) had impressive outings. Whitted was the third Lady Lions to reach double figures with 11 points against LHU. Mitchell just missed out a double-double with nine points and 10 boards in 15 minutes of action.
