Slay Earns Academic All-District Honors

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Katie Slay has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this afternoon. Slay is one of six to earn the honor within the District II category.

Slay will now be considered for national honors as an Academic All-American, which is set to be announced at the end of November. A two-time Second Team AVCA All-American and 2011 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Slay has emerged as a top offensive and defensive performer on the court, earning numerous honors for her efforts. Presently, her .408 hitting percentage ranks second in the conference and 22nd nationally, while her 1.60 blocks per frame ranks fourth in the nation and leads the Big Ten. Slay has also led the Nittany Lion blocking unit in 18 of 22 matches this season.

Off the court, Slay has been actively involved as a volunteer for the Special Olympics and the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON), since her sophomore season. In addition to serving as a member of the Student- Athlete Advisory Board, Slay spends her summers coaching and mentoring young students who attend Penn State volleyball camps. Slay is majoring in communication sciences and disorders and minoring in human development and family studies.

The Capital One Academic All-District volleyball teams are selected annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America and recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. All nominees must be either a starter or an important reserve and have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

Slay and the rest of the Penn State women's volleyball team hosts Big Ten foes No. 14 Purdue and Indiana this weekend in Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions and the Boilermakers square off Friday, Nov. 8 at 7th p.m., before taking on the Hoosiers Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7th p.m.
