UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 49 Penn State won all eight matches that were completed en route to a 7-0 victory over the Navy Midshipmen on Sunday afternoon.
"I thought the team played really well today, and overall I'm very happy with the entire weekend," said interim head coach Chris Cagle. "I felt singles- and doubles-wise, everybody was ready to play and compete and with this being the first weekend that was one of our major focuses."
The Nittany Lions got off to an early 1-0 lead as they had the previous two times this year when they took the first two doubles matches. Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) won their doubles match for the second straight day giving Penn State an early lead in the doubles competition. They knocked off Logan Antill and Katie Porter, 6-0.
With Penn State in the lead in both doubles matches Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) and Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) topped Erin Snook and Summer Ralston, 6-4. Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) were leading 5-3 in their match when the Nittany Lions clinched the doubles point.
Penn State continued on it's way in singles winning all six matches. Sapogova finished first for the Nittany Lions, knocking off Sam Droop 6-2, 6-0. The next to finish for Penn State was Sandor who after dropping her second set came back in the tiebreaker to put the Nittany Lions up 3-0 in the match besting Darien Sears 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-5).
"That's what college tennis is all about," Cagle said. "Very rarely are things going to go smoothly the whole time. Things don't always go your way, so for her and Taylor [Shukow] to hang in there and weather the storm and be able to turn their matches around, I was very pleased.
The Nittany Lions secured the win when Bedard defeated Logan Antill 6-1, 6-3. With he victory, Marie remains unbeaten on the young season and has won at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spot. At No. 1 singles Utting won the tiebreaker in the second set to claim the victory against Erin Snook, 6-4, 7-6(3).
At No. 5 singles Whiteaway knocked off Noelle Kaufmann 6-2, 6-2 to put Penn State ahead 6-0. Shukow ended the match giving Penn State their 7-0 victory when she came from behind in the second set to down Mikaela Carlson 6-4, 7-6(4).
Penn State will head out on the road next when they face No. 19 Baylor in Waco, Texas on Saturday, January 25 at 7 p.m.
