UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Redshirt sophomore forward Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) registered his 16th point of the season to set a new career high and nine Nittany Lions recorded a point, but the Penn State men's hockey team fell to No. 10/10 Michigan, 7-3, at Pegula Ice Arena Friday night. The Nittany Lions fell to 4-18-1 (0-9-0-0 Big Ten), while the Wolverines improved to 14-6-3 (6-2-1-1 Big Ten).
Michigan jumped out to an early two-goal lead midway through the first period, but sophomore Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) and Scheid netted their fourth and 11th goals of the season, respectively, in the second period to tie the game. The Wolverines responded with five of the next six goals, including an empty-net tally, to account for the 7-3 final. Freshman Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) also scored for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State, which out shot its opponent for the sixth time in the last seven games (36-28), went 0-for-3 on the power play. The Wolverines converted on 1-of-3 power-play opportunities. Freshman goaltender Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.), who allowed three goals on 11 shots, started for the Nittany Lions, while junior PJ Musico (Orange, Calif.) made 13 saves in the loss.
The teams will play again Saturday (Feb. 8) when they face off at Pegula Ice Arena at 5 p.m. The game will air live on ESPNU, GoPSUsports.com and the Penn State Sports Network.
The Wolverines scored twice in the opening frame as the visitors exited the period with a 2-0 lead. At 6:05 of the stanza, Compher, who assisted on the team's second tally, opened the scoring when he converted on Alex Guptill's rebound.
While on the power play, Guptill gave Michigan a 2-0 lead. After receiving a pass from Mac Bennett, Guptill rang a shot off the post and into the net.
In goal-filled second period, the teams combined for four tallies in a 3:43 span as Penn State tied the game before Michigan re-took its two-goal advantage. With 17:01 left to play, Ricky DeRosa's (Aston, Pa.) and Luke Juha's (Mississauga, Ont.) goalmouth attempts were stopped, but the third Nittany Lion try from Baily found daylight.
The Nittany Lions tied the game just 59 seconds later with Scheid's marker. Defenseman Patrick Koudys (Smithville, Ont.) rushed the puck through the neutral zone and took a shot that Michigan netminder Zach Nagelvoort mishandled. Scheid jammed at the rebound and scored on his second attempt. Defenseman Nate Jensen (Shorewood, Minn.) also collected an assist on the play.
Michigan responded with a pair of strikes in a 50-second span. Andrew Copp made it a 3-2 game when his wrist shot from Bennett and Brennan Serville beat McAdam from the slot. At 6:42, Zach Hyman's wrister eluded Musico as the Wolverines grabbed a 4-2 advantage.
In the third period, Michael Downing, who assisted on Hyman's goal, extended the Michigan lead to 5-2 when he scored with 12:57 left in the game.
At 14:29, Saar ended the Wolverine run with his third tally of the season. Redshirt junior Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) started the play with a pass to Saar, who entered the offensive zone and unleashed a shot at the net. Nagelvoort made the save and after Jonathan Milley's (Gatineau, Que.) attempt was stopped, Saar fired the rebound to the back of the net.
Michigan ended the game with two goals in the final 2:07 of the game. Hyman added his second of the game when he scored into an empty net, and Copp netted his second of the contest with 1:17 remaining as the Wolverines skated to the 7-3 final.
