UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After a week off from competition, the No. 8 Penn State men's gymnastics team will pair up with head coach Jeff Thompson and the women's gymnastics team for a double dual meet Saturday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. in Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions men's squad will host No. 15 Temple, while the women's team will welcome Nebraska.
Both teams are currently ranked within the latest GymInfo poll, having competed against each other twice this season at the West Point Open and the Navy Open. In both outings, Penn State outscored the Owls as a team by more than 22 points. The Nittany Lions have not competed since winning the Navy Open Jan. 25th with a top score of 420.900, beating out four other squads. PSU also took home three individal titles, posting first-place finishes in the floor exercise and on the pommel horse and high bar.
Penn State enters the week with at least two Nittany Lions ranked within the top 20 in almost every single apparatus. Sophomore Trevor Howard (Columbus, Ohio) is leading the group, ranked within the top 20 in three different events. He's tabbed fourth on the rings, 13th on the parallel bars and 18th on the high bar.
Sophomore Alexis Torres (Catano, Puerto Rico) is ranked in two different events, coming in at No. 12 in the floor exercise, while also maintaining the eighth-highest score in the NCAA on the rings. Two weeks ago at the Navy Open, Torres secured a first-place finish in the floor exercise.
Junior Matt Felleman (Medway, Mass.) will look to continue his stellar performance on the high bar, as he is ranked second nationally in the event. In Penn State's most recent outing at the Navy Open, Penn State captured the top three positions in the high bar, including a first-place finish from Howard, a second-place finish from Felleman and a third-place finish from redshirt freshman Leroy Clarke (Maplewood, N.J.). Clarke is presently ranked 20th nationally in the high bar and tied for 18th on the parallel bars.
As a team, Penn State is ranked within the top 10 nationally in six events. The Nittany Lions are positioned highest on the rings, (73.383), ranking sixth on the parallel bars and seventh in the floor exercise and on the high bar. PSU is also eighth nationally on the vault and ninth on the pommel horse.
Both season and single meet tickets are available for purchase. Season ticket packages costs $12 for adults and $8 for youth, while single meet tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth. Single meet tickets are available for purchase in advance at the Bryce Jordan Center and at the Rec Hall ticket window on the day of the meet. Group tickets can be purchased in advance for a reduced rate of $4 per ticket. Fans can catch all the action from Rec Hall with live scoring updates, which will be available on www.GoPSUSports.com.
