UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; March 7, 2014 - The No. 19 Penn State women's gymnastics program will hit the road for their final two meets of the season, starting on Saturday (March 8) in a quad meet at New Hampshire with Bridgeport and George Washington.
The Nittany Lions closed out their regular season home slate with an impressive victory over Bridgeport, Western Michigan and Yale last weekend at home. The Nittany Lions swept the podium in all four events and compiled a score of 196.600, their second highest score of the season, to improve to 15-2 on the year.
The Nittany Lions are currently among the Top-20 in overall team score and on all four apparatus. They improved their Regional Qualifying Score of 195.910 over the weekend, but dropped a spot in the rankings to 19th. The Blue and White currently rank 15th on the floor exercise (49.120), are tied for 15th on the vault (49.095), sit 18th on the balance beam (48.875) and are tied for 20th on the uneven bars (48.985).
The Regional Qualifying Score is based on a team's and an all-around competitor's six best regular-season-meet scores, of which three must be away.
Senior Kassidy Stauder (Palmerton, Pa.) continues to lead the Nittany Lions in the all-around and on the uneven bars and balance beam. She currently ranks 20th in the NCAA in the all-around with a RQS of 39.245 after posting a career-high 39.425 on Senior Night last weekend to win the competition. In the final home quad meet, Stauder won the uneven bars and tied for the balance beam title. She finished among the top-four on all four events, as well.
On the season, Stauder has set a new career high in all four events and the all-around. She has won a pair of all-around titles, six uneven bar crowns and topped the balance beam on five occasions.
Freshman Emma Sibson (Allen, Texas) was honored as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after a solid showing against Bridgeport, Western Michigan and Yale last weekend. She tied for the event title with teammates Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) and Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) at 9.875 and posted a career-high mark of 9.825 on the balance beam to finish third.
Sanabria-Robles finished second in the all-around with her third straight score of 39.000 or better by scoring 9.775 or better on all four apparatus. She tallied a score of 9.875 to tie for the vault title, tallied 9.800 on the balance beam and boasted 9.775 on the uneven bars and floor exercise.
Penn State will conclude the regular season in a quad meet at No. 7 Michigan with Iowa and No. 12 Minnesota on Saturday, March 15. The meet in Ann Arbor will air live on the Big Ten Network at 1:30 p.m.
Penn State will begin the postseason on their home floor, hosing the 2014 Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships on March 22 and the 2014 NCAA Regional Championships on April 5 inside historic Rec Hall.
