Dornes Leads Field at North & South Amateur Championship

July 3, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Rising junior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) took a share of the lead after two rounds at the 114th North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 8.

Dornes started the tournament in the first round with a 72. His round two performance, though, fired him into a first place position tie with Pac 12 Freshman of the Year out of Southern Cal, Rico Hoey.

Dornes made five birdies Wednesday morning to tally a 4-under 67, his best round since posting a 68 single-round score at the Kepler Intercollegiate on April 12, 2014. Also in the field is Penn State teammate and rising junior Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.).

The North & South Amateur is the longest consecutive-running amatuer golf championship in the United States and continues to draw the best amateur talent in the sport. Round three stroke play continues today, July 3, 2014, followed by four rounds of match play Friday and Saturday.
