UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Forwards Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) each scored, but the Penn State men's hockey team fell to second-ranked Boston College, 3-2, in front of a sellout crowd of 6,214 fans at Pegula Ice Arena Saturday night. The Nittany Lions competed against a ranked team for the 10th time in a 13-game span.
With just over 13 minutes left in third, Holstrom netted Penn State's conference-leading fourth shorthanded goal of the season to help the Nittany Lion make it a one-goal game. In addition, Scheid fired his 10th marker of the year in the second period as he tied his career high with his 15th point.
The Nittany Lions (4-15-1) out shot Boston College (18-4-3), which surrendered its first shorthanded goal of the season, by a 35-30 margin. The Eagles finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while Penn State went 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Freshman netminder Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.) turned aside 27 shots, including 15 power-play attempts, while Boston College goaltender Thatcher Demko made 33 saves.
Penn State, which played its 10th one-goal game of the season, held an 11-7 shots advantage in the first period, but Boston College skated to a 1-0 lead with 12:20 remaining in the frame. McAdam tuned aside Bill Arnold's initial shot from the slot, but Kevin Hayes knocked the rebound off the left post and into the net. Johnny Gaudreau also collected an assist on the play.
In the second period, Scheid tied the game with 13:15 left in the period. From behind the net, Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) threaded a pass to Mike Williamson (Leduc, Alta.) outside the crease, but Demko turned aside the defenseman's attempt. Scheid located the loose puck and his persistence paid off as he buried the rebound.
During four-on-four action, Gaudreau helped the Eagles retake the lead at 16:04 of the frame. After creating a turnover, Arnold pulled up in the offensive zone and found Gaudreau, who made a move to his backhand for the goal.
While on a five-minute power play, Hayes gave Boston College a two-goal advantage at 4:28 of the third. Patrick Brown moved the puck to Arnold behind the net, where he found Hayes for the one-timer.
During the same man advantage, Holstrom broke through 2:30 later. Sophomore defenseman Luke Juha (Mississauga, Ont.) chipped the puck up to the Yorba Linda, Calif., native, who entered the offensive zone on an odd-man rush before wristing a shot off Demko.
McAdam was pulled for an extra attacker with 1:16 remaining in regulation but, despite firing five shots toward the Boston College net with only one reaching Demko, Penn State was unable to secure the equalizer.
The Nittany Lions will return to Big Ten action Jan. 31-Feb. 1 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a two-game series with Ohio State. Opening faceoff for the series opener is set for 7 p.m.
