Women's Cross Country Finishes Fifth at Regionals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's cross country team tallied a fifth-place finish Friday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional as freshman Jillian Hunsberger (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished 11th (20 minutes, 49 seconds) to pace the Nittany Lions.

With her 11th-place finish, Hunsberger automatically qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships next Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Hunsberger was the one of the top-four individuals on a non-NCAA Championship qualifying team.

Hunsberger along with Tori Gerlach (Perkasie, Pa.) and Katie Rodden (Ardmore, Pa.) were named all-region for their top-25 performances. Gerlach completed the 6k course in a time of 21:13 to finish 21st, while Rodden took 24th with her time of 21:15.

Lauren Mills (West Chester, Pa.) was the fourth Nittany Lion to cross the finish line as she clocked in at 21:54 to place 49th.

Rounding out the scoring for Penn State was Stephanie Aldrich (West Chester, Pa.). Aldrich finished 52nd with her time of 21:58.

Also running for Penn State was Elizabeth Chikotas (Hellertown, Pa.) and Megan Hellman (Rumson, N.J). Chikotas and Hellman finished 54th (21:59) and 129th (23:19), respectively.

No. 2 Georgetown won the team title with their score of 38 points, while No. 7 West Virginia placed second (42 points). Individually, Katrina Coogan (Georgetown) won the women's race with her time of 20:06.

As a team, Penn State finished fifth with their score of 155 points.

Megan Curham (Princeton), Morgan Szekely (La Salle), Elizabeth Weiler (Lehigh) also qualified for the NCAA Championships as individuals.

With their fifth-place finish, Penn State scored points in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup.
