UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Two Nittany Lions broke McCoy Natatorium records, helping the Penn State men's swimming and diving team to a second place after the first day of dual meet competition against Michigan and Virginia on Friday. The Nittany Lions have a 99-66 advantage over the Cavaliers, but trail the Wolverines, 105-62.
Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.) set the pool record with his first-place 200 back showing. His 1:46.08 time was .03 second faster than the previous record, set by former Nittany Lion Josh Weaver in 1999.
In the 100 free, Shane Ryan (Havertown, Pa.) secured a first-place record-setting performance after clocking in at 43.83, more than half of a second faster than John Hauser's 44.39 mark set in 2013.
Savoy and Ryan also helped Penn State's relay teams to second-place finishes. In the 200 free relay, the team of Ryan, Savoy, Jeff Young (Hershey, Pa.) and Matt Grillo (Montreal, Quebec) swam to a 1:20.59 time. The 400 medley relay team of Savoy, Ryan, Andrew Schuehler (Camden, N.J.) and Young touched the wall in 3:16.39.
