Rodriguez Bags Another National Honor

Jan. 8, 2015

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Jan. 8, 2015 - Penn State women's soccer junior Raquel Rodriguez (San Jose, Costa Rica) has captured the Women's College Boot Supporter's Choice award after winning the popular vote of the Soccer News Net national player of the year poll.

In 2014, Rodriguez was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, her second player of the year honor after being named the 2012 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The junior set the tempo of the Nittany Lions' hugely successful midfield; in 18 games she netted seven goals on 37 shots, including three game-winners. The Costa Rican Women's National Team member recently helped Las Ticas make history by becoming the first Central American team to earn a Women's World Cup bid.

Online fan voting accounts for 40% of the total toward the award. The remaining 60% of the vote will be cast by the Soccer News Net editorial staff. The winner of the College Boot Award will be announced next week.

For the Soccer News Net College Boot award, the editors of each site in the Soccer News Net network (Big Apple Soccer, Chicagoland Soccer News, LA Soccer News, New England Soccer News, Philly Soccer News, Dallas Soccer News, DC Soccer News and Sunshine Soccer News) nominated up to three local players for the award, each of whom will be eligible for the regional player of the year award. Six additional at-large selections rounded out the nominations.
