UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's swimming and diving team will showcase a half dozen athletes this coming week when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa for the 2015 NCAA Championships.
Bob Bantley (Maple Glen, Pa.), Matt Grillo (Montreal, Quebec), Kyle Madley (Madison, N.J.), Andrew Schuehler (Camden, N.J.), Shane Ryan (Havertown, Pa.) and Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.) will compete in the three-day event scheduled for Thursday, Mar. 26 - Saturday, Mar. 28 at the school's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
This will be the fifth straight year PSU will bring at least six swimmers to NCAA's and half of this year's swimmers who will be making the trip have prior national championship experience. Schuehler, Ryan and Savoy all competed in NCAA's a year ago in Austin, Texas, while Bantley, Grillo and Madley represent a crop of Nittany Lion newcomers to the event.
The Championships will begin with preliminaries at 12 p.m., Thursday and conclude with a finals session at 8 p.m., Saturday. Prelims and Finals will follow that same schedule throughout all three days.
Live results for the entire event will be available via hawkeyesports.com and a live web stream will be accessible for each preliminary and finals session on the same site as well.
ESPN3 will additionally stream the final sessions Friday and Saturday live. In addition, ESPNU will also air a 90-minute show at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Apr. 8.
EVENT HISTORY
Penn State will look to improve upon its 17th place, 63 point performance from a year ago which coincidentally enough was its best output in more than a decade. 72.5 are the most points PSU has ever put up on the board at NCAA's, accomplishing the feat in 2001.
THE SWIMMERS
Bob Bantley
Bantley, a sophomore has had a great second year campaign setting personal bests in five different events (three of which came at the B1G Championships) and winning a total of two races. He is the fastest on the team this year in the 200 free with his 1:36.60 time.
Matt Grillo
Grillo, a junior is another newcomer to NCAA's and has set personal bests in two events this season. He finished in 20.17 during the 50 free at Big Ten's and touched the wall in 44.55 during the 100 free also at the conference championships. He is the second fastest on the team in the 50 free this season.
Kyle Madley
Madley, a senior will be making his first ever trip to the NCAA Championships in his final season competing for the Nittany Lions. The Madison, N.J. native has had a standout season for head coach Tim Murphy thus far, earning season fastest times as a finalist in both the 100 and 200 butterflies with his 47.89 and 1:46.15 performances, which he achieved at the B1G Championships. Those two times were also personal bests in the events. Madley additionally swam the butterfly legs of the Medley Relays which earned `A' cuts at the Big Ten Championships and was his team's third leading point scorer during the four-day event.Â
Andrew Schuehler
Schuehler is the first NCAA returner of the bunch as the sophomore is making his second appearance in as many years. Last season he was on the 400 medley relay team that helped set a new program record during preliminaries on the championship's first day. This season he has excelled in the pool, posting personal bests in the 50 free and the 100 fly. Schuehler also took home the gold in the 100 breast against Georgia Tech (Oct. 3) and is the fastest on the team in that event this season.
Shane Ryan
Ryan will also be competing in his second NCAA's and returns as an All-American in two events from a year ago. He took home the silver in the 100 back in 2014 and set a new program record in the process. In 2015 he continued his spectacular swimming with a gold and bronze at the B1G Championships and 14 total first place finishes. He was the fastest Blue and White swimmer in a total of three events this season and is undefeated in the 100 back, finishing first in a total of four races.
Nate Savoy
Savoy, a senior is the most seasoned Penn State swimmer at the NCAA Championships as this will be his third appearance on the national stage. Last season he was an honorable mention for All-American in two events and achieved All-America status in another two in 2013. During the 2015 season he has continued his dominance in the pool with a dozen first place finishes as well as two silvers during the B1G Championships. He also set new personal bests in two events (200 back & 100fly) during his senior campaign, while tallying fastest times on the team in a pair of events.
