FINAL STATISTICS

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Shannon Good (Horseheads, N.Y.) launched her first career home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead Penn State softball team to a 3-1 win in the first game of their series against Rutgers. Freshman Jessica Cummings (Owings, Md.) added a solid performance on the mound, helping the Nittany Lions to improve to 25-24 overall and 7-11 in Big Ten play.

Five different Nittany Lions collected hits, with Good leading the way with a career-high two knocks.

Penn State got on the board first, driving in two runs in the fifth inning. Reina Furuya (Waipahu, Hawaii) started the frame with an infield single to the third baseman. Lexi Knief (Ramsey, N.J.) followed that up by lining a double to the center field wall to allow Furuya to score. A bunt single by Mollie Sorenson (Stevenson Ranch, Fla.) found its way through the infield as Knief hustled home to give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.

The Scarlet Knights responded with their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth.

With one out in the sixth, Good sent a blast over the right centerfield fence to put the Lions up 3-1. The homer, along with a second-inning single, helped Good to establish a new career-high.

Cummings held Rutgers scoreless through the first five innings, allowing only two hits and only nine baserunners, with two of those runners reaching on errors and three more reaching on fielder's choices.

The freshman pitched a complete game, allowing four hits, while striking out five and walking only two batters. None of the Scarlet Knights' four hits went for extra bases.

With the complete game, Cummings reached the 100 innings mark this season.

The Nittany Lions continue their final home series of the season on Saturday at 3 p.m. as they honor Meghan Bradley (Santa Monica, Calif.), Marissa Diescher (Livingston Manor, N.Y.) and Alicia Walker (Los Alamitos, Calif.) on Senior Day. The ceremony will start 15 minutes before the game. The series finale begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday as the team plays their Pink Zone game.
