LEWISBURG, Pa. - A pair of Penn State swimmers qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials Friday, July 24. For the women, Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) qualified in the 400-meter individual medley and Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.) qualified in the 200-meter freestyle.
A total of 16 women's and 10 men's Nittany Lions are competing in the Mid Atlantic Senior Championships on the campus of Bucknell University Wednesday to Saturday in hopes of advancing to next year's Olympic Trials.
Francis earned the first-place finish in the 400 IM, touching in at 4:54.12 to earn a spot at the 2016 Olympic Trials. The East Meadow, N.Y. native also picked up a first-place finish on Thursday, winning the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:21.43.
Stasiunas qualified for his second race at the 2016 Olympic Trials when he won the 200 free in 1:51.64, while Ryan O'Neill (Howell, N.J.) finished in second with a time of 1:53.66. Stasiunas punched his first ticket to the trails on Thursday when he notched a first-place finish in the 400 free.
Additionally, on the women's side Emily Harris (Downington, Pa.) and Katie Saloky (Bloomsburg, Pa.) earned top-five finishes in the 100-meter breaststroke, while Megan Wujciak (Livingston, N.J.) placed second in the 200-meter freestyle followed by Niki Price (Manchester, Pa.) and Katelyn Sowinski (Severna Park, Md.). For the men, Joseph Ahlberg (Glastonbury, Conn.) place third in the 400-meter individual medley.
The meet will conclude Saturday, July 25 with the preliminaries starting at 9 a.m. followed by the first round of finals at 1:35 p.m. and the second round at 6 p.m.
