Nittany Lions Continue to Earn Olympic Trial Bids

SAN ANTONIO - Penn State swimmers Katie Rowe (Glenville, N.Y.) and Tim Maurer (Hershey, Pa.) both earned Olympic trials bids, Friday and Saturday, respectively, as Nittany Lion swimmers continue to compete at the 2015 USA Swimming Philips 66 National Championships.

Rowe qualified for the trials in the women's 200-meter individual medley, completing a time trial in 2:18.52, just below the cut of 2:18.69. Maurer swam a time trial in the men's 200 IM, achieving a cut of 2:04.71.

Additionally Saturday, Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) improved her trials cut in the 400 IM with a time of 4:50.21. Melissa Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico) turned in a strong performance in the 100 breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:09.60, and then improved in a time trial two hours later, dropping her time to 1:09.16. Andy Schuehler swam a time trial and achieved a personal best in the 100 fly of 55.02.

In addition to Rowe's performance Friday, junior Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.) reached a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifying mark in the 200 free for the second time this summer when he touched in at 1:51.16.

On Thursday, Katelyn Sowinski (Severna Park, Md.) and Francis both added the 400-meter freestyle to their list of events for the U.S. Olympic Trials, as both swam below the qualifying standard in the race. The Philips 66 National Championships continue at the Northside Swim Center in San Antonio through Monday, August 10. Sowinski will swim twice Sunday, competing in the 200 butterfly and joining Francis in the 800 free. Rodriguez will round out the competition for the Lion swimmers Monday in the 200 breast.
