SAN ANTONIO - Penn State women's swimmer Katelyn Sowinski (Severna Park, Md.) qualified for a third event at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, adding the 200-meter butterfly to the list competing Sunday at the 2015 USA Swimming Philips 66 National Championships.

Sowinski placed 24th in the field in 2:14.54 to earn the bid. She previously qualified in the 400- and 800-meter freestyles.

Sowinski and Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) both also competed in the 800 free again, with Francis narrowly missing the Olympic trial cut in 8:51.28.

The Philips 66 National Championships continue at the Northside Swim Center in San Antonio through Monday. Melissa Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico) is slated to round out the competition for the Lion swimmers in the 200 breaststroke.

Penn State swimmers Katie Rowe (Glenville, N.Y.) and Tim Maurer (Hershey, Pa.) both earned Olympic trials bids, Friday and Saturday. Rowe qualified for the trials in the women's 200-meter individual medley, completing a time trial in 2:18.52, just below the cut of 2:18.69. Maurer swam a time trial in the men's 200 IM, achieving a cut of 2:04.71.

Additionally Saturday, Francis improved her trials cut in the 400 IM with a time of 4:50.21. Rodriguez turned in a strong performance in the 100 breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:09.60, and then improved in a time trial two hours later, dropping her time to 1:09.16. Andy Schuehler swam a time trial and achieved a personal best in the 100 fly of 55.02.

In addition to Rowe's performance Friday, junior Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.) reached a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifying mark in the 200 free for the second time this summer when he touched in at 1:51.16.

On Thursday, Sowinski and Francis both added the 400-meter freestyle to their list of events for the U.S. Olympic Trials, as both swam below the qualifying standard in the race. Sowinski previously qualified in the 800 free, while Francis did the same in the 400 individual medley.
