UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State cross country and track & field teams participated in the American Red Cross blood drive Wednesday, Sept. 23 in Heritage Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center.
"The reason why the Penn State coaching staff and student-athletes do the blood drive is we love to give back to the community," said assistant coach Fritz Spence.
"Going back to 2008 when I was diagnosed with leukemia, people donating blood is the reason I'm here today. We think that it is important to give back to the community; there are a lot of individuals out there who are sick, whether it be sickle cell or cancer or they're just in need of blood. There is a need and a demand out there, and every year we want to do our part in giving back to the community."
Penn State cross country and track & field athletes and coaches not only donated their blood, but some donated their time to help work the event.
The Nittany Lion cross country teams will return to action Oct. 3 when they travel to Louisville, Ky. for the Greater Louisville Classic. The Greater Louisville Classic will be the first meet that will count towards NCAA Championship points, and also serve as a beneficial course preview for the NCAA Championships hosted by Louisville Nov. 21.
